Troubleshooting Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 and Outlook Integration

We have recently encountered issues with Microsoft Outlook performance while using the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Outlook Integration.  You may be experiencing extreme slowness in Outlook when the CRM Outlook Integration is installed.  In one scenario, our customer was using a terminal server and as soon as Outlook started, it would consume an entire CPU for processing.  Then, when multiple people logged in and all the CPUs on the server were being used, this caused issues with major slowdowns.

After much investigation, we discovered that the CRM Outlook integration was causing the high CPU usage, and disabling it resolved the issue.  Specifically, the Automatic Email Tagging feature was the source of the slowdown.  This feature can be turned on/off using the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Diagnostics utility.  When off, the CPU usage returns to normal.

This feature performs a very important function, but is not critical for day-to-day operations for most users.  This feature periodically checks the CRM database for recently tracked emails by other users or from server-side sync and updates emails in Outlook to reflect their tracked status.

The below screenshot shows how to disable this feature.
