How Effective is Your Website?

Do you know how well your website is working for you? Are you getting the leads you think you should be getting from your website? Are your key words working for you? How does your website compare with your competition?

Managing a website can be a full-time job, but there are several tricks to making it work as well as you want it to.

  • Know that your content is accurate and up to date. This is where you want to start, but it is just the beginning.
  • Understand the health of your pages.
    • How many pages can be accessed? This sounds funny, but sometimes access to a specific page can be broken, usually due to a linking issue.
    • How many pages have healthy search engine crawlability? There are two reasons a page cannot be crawled: either your site’s server response time is more than 5 seconds, or your server refused access to your webpages. You will want to address these issues to improve the user experience.
  • Understand the accuracy of your links.
    • Do internal links from one page to another always work properly, or can users get linked to non-existent webpages because of content updates or other changes?
  • Understand the health of your images.
    • A “broken” image is an image that cannot be displayed because it no longer exists, its URL is misspelled, or because the file path is not valid. These are easy fixes to address, but you must know they exist!
  • Understand the health of your title tags.
    • Title tags can be accidentally duplicated, but this makes it difficult for search engines to determine which of a website’s pages is relevant for a specific search query. Pages with duplicate titles have a lower chance of ranking well. Again, this is an easy fix once identified.
  • Understand the health of your meta descriptions.
    • Duplicate meta descriptions can also present a problem for search queries. Ensure your meta descriptions are valid and unique.

There are many additional items to look for when determining website health and effectiveness: DNS resolution issues, duplicate content issues, format errors, too large HTML sizes, nonsecure pages, etc.

Is your head spinning yet? Hopefully, your website developer is on top of all these issues and gives you confidence that your website is fully functional with minimal errors or limitations that suboptimizes your search results.
