The Quest for Continual Growth – The Growth Mindset

The Quest for Continual Growth – The Growth Mindset

Every New Year, I see the same people making the same promises to themselves. Over and over again.

“I’m going to lose weight.”

“I’m going to go to the gym.”

“I’m going to eat healthier.”

“I’m going to start saving money.”

My personal holiday gatherings aren’t the only places I see this. I often see this in workplaces too. Many times, managers and executives will meet to discuss goals for the year. These can range anywhere from “this year we want to grow our business by 20%” to “we want to hold employees more accountable.”

Some people have more success with accomplishing goals than others. Why? The reason lies in whether that person (or company) has a static mindset or a growth mindset.

Those with a static mindset are comfortable working as-is and going with the status quo. People with this mindset don’t feel inclined to change, especially if things are going well for them. They will often say things like “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” or “if I am able to do my job, what else is there to learn?” These people also find it easy to make excuses to stop themselves from growing, saying things like “I don’t have enough time for that” or “I’m too tired to do that” or “I just got to this point, so I’m okay right now.”

This doesn’t mean they don’t experience growth. They could make more sales this quarter than the last due to seasonal changes. They could lose those first 10 pounds of their 20-pound goal. The point where complacency sets in is where the static mindset becomes visible.

In contrast, a growth mindset is about recognizing that no matter where you are, there’s always room for improvement. People with a growth mindset are always looking forward and at what they can work on. They find ways to make things they do every day better. They look at what they want and find a way to spend that extra hour in the morning getting that workout in or spending a weekend taking a class to learn more about a skill. They don’t settle for “good” or “it works”. They make time in their schedule to accomplish the goals they always talk about wanting.

This doesn’t mean that they don’t appreciate what they have though. People with a growth mindset recognize that it’s important to take stock in what you have accomplished, as all these accomplishments are what motivate them to move forward. That person who watches webinars during their lunch? They are still proud of the last project they finished at work – they’re just preparing themselves to be better for the next one. That friend who already lost 10 pounds?  They find the motivation to hit the gym at 5:00 am before work, because they realize they would never have lost the weight by hitting the snooze button.

When it comes to businesses, you can apply a growth mindset to help your company make more sales and grow.
